Complete Spanish

Track 68

1. Work out this and that from a hook Method

Esta noche is the phrase to keep. From it you can derive the whole set, and it also tells you noche is feminine.

este / esta → drop the t → ese / esa

Esa noche · Esas noches · Este hombre · Ese hombre · Estos hombres · Esos hombres

Remember where the vowels come from: the e of el in este, the os of los in estos.

You can also say el hombre este or el hombre ese. This may be a structure taken from Arabic, where the same order is used, another trace of those eight hundred years of contact.

2. esto and eso, the neuter this and that Rule

Sometimes this refers to no specific noun at all, as in I can't believe this. For that there is a neuter form, ending in -o.

esto
this (no specific noun)
eso
that (no specific noun)

No creo esto · Nada me gusta más que esto · Nada me gustó más que eso

3. tan ... que, so ... that Grammar

Tan is so, and it pairs with que for that.

tan + adjective + que + result

Tan cansado · Estaba tan cansada · Estábamos tan cansados que dormimos todo el día

Estábamos tan cansados cuando llegamos que dormimos todo el día.

Notice how one verb sets the time for the whole sentence. Dormimos and llegamos could each be present or past, but estábamos at the front establishes the context, so the rest is understood as past.

4. cuánto, and asking how many times Vocabulary

cuánto
how much
cuántas veces
how many times
todo el día
all day, "all the day"

No sé cuántas veces lo visité · No sé cuántas veces lo visitaron · No sé cuántas veces la visitaron

5. Look back to find a gender Method

When a word's gender is not obvious from its ending, find somewhere you have already used it.

Otra vez, not "otro vez", tells you vez is feminine. So it is cuántas veces.

Same trick with día: it ends in a but takes el, so all day is todo el día, not "toda".

6. New vocabulary Vocabulary

el hombre
the man
creer
to believe

Nada me gusta más que esto. Note the inverted gustar shape holds: nothing pleases me more than this.
