Complete Spanish

Track 16

1. A stressed o splits into ue Rule

The companion to the e splitting. Under the stress of the present tense, an o in the root may split into ue. You already knew one example: puedo is a split o.

e → ie  ·  o → ue

It is the accent on the penultimate syllable, one of the fundamental elements of the present tense, that makes the vowel vulnerable to splitting in the first place.

poder → puedo
to be able → I can
dormir → duermo
to sleep → I sleep
encontrar → encuentro
to find → I find
mostrar → muestro
to show → I show
empezar → empiezo
to start → I start (this one is an e)

Duerme · Duermen · Muestra · Muestran · Empieza · Empiezan · Empiezas · ¿Cuándo empiezas?

2. The habit that makes it work Method

Asked for he starts, the student offers "empieze". The fix is always the same.

You must go back to the "to" form before you make that decision. It is essential to get into that habit, because then you know where you are. Otherwise it is guesswork.

empezar → empeza → empieza. Run the process in that order and it comes out right.

3. The o split between English and Spanish Pattern

The same phenomenon is visible in words that crossed over, which makes it much easier to trust.

puerto
port (Puerto Rico, "the rich port")
fuerza
force
escuela
school
cuerpo
body (corp- in corporate)
nuevo
new (nov- in innovative)
pueblo
village, a people
muerto
dead

Población is an exception to the -ción pattern: not "populación". You can see pob- splitting into pue- in pueblo.

Mortgage literally means "death pact": mort- is the Latin root for death and -gage means pact.

4. Nouns are what you can put "the" in front of Concept

At school you are told a noun is a thing or an object. La muerte (the death) is not an object, but it is a noun, because you can put the in front of it.

la muerte
the death: a noun
muerto / muerta
dead: an adjective, describing

The adjective goes plural too: muertos, muertas.

El poder is the power and poder is to be able. It looks like a verb, but with el in front of it you know it is a noun. El is the masculine the, and also the word for he.

5. Some form of the verb is often the noun Heads-up

Do not assume a word is a verb just because it looks like one. Any version of a verb, the "to" form or another, might also be a noun. Whatever you can put a or the in front of is a noun.

encuentro
I encounter
un encuentro
an encounter

Same with muestra: it is he/she/it shows, but una muestra is a sample.

6. New vocabulary Vocabulary

empezar
to start (the common one)
comenzar
to start, to commence (easier, less common)
dormir
to sleep (dormant, dormitory)
encontrar
to find, to encounter, to meet
rico
rich, nice, tasty, sweet

The z in empezar sounds /th/ in most of Spain: empe/th/ar.

To fall asleep is to sleep myself: me duermo, as against plain duermo for I sleep.

Me duermo · Lo encuentro · Muestra needs no rolled r: it is a single r.
